Volunteer
Opportunities
Take
a stand against violence and abuse by giving your time to participate
in one of our programs - to help support the journey to peace.
Volunteers
are the Heart of Bay Area Turning Point and contribute thousands
of hours of service to the agency each year. Volunteers range from
teenagers to senior citizens. Orientation sessions are held throughout
the year for those who wish to share their time and talents in special
projects, direct services and prevention activities.
Activities

Each volunteer
will need to bring the following items to the orientation session:
- 2 forms
of identification (1 pictured)

Bay
Area Turning Point Celebrates the Generosity of Volunteers
The rain was
pouring, there were gale force winds and temperatures were dropping
into spring chills. None of these factors could deter Bay Area Turning
Point and its volunteers from enjoying the Annual Volunteer Appreciation
& Awards Banquet. The 2008 ceremony and luncheon were held in
the impressive environment of Club Classic overlooking Clear Lake.
The special afternoon focused on the appreciation of our volunteers
who give of their time answering hotlines, tagging and sorting at
the resale shop, caring for the children in the shelter child care,
raising much-needed funds, packing and storing canned goods at shelter,
moving furniture and even sweeping the floors. Volunteers give from
their heart and dedication to BATP’s mission. Area companies
and churches also give to their community by lending their time,
talents and energy to help their neighbors.
Because the
community is so generous, there was no shortage of candidates for
awards of recognition. Bay Area Turning Point was proud to present
Partnership Awards to Houston Training Academy, LyondellBasell Industries
and Wyle Laboratories. Spirit of Volunteerism Awards were presented
to Diane Jones for the Resale shop, Marilyn Scott for Childcare
and Debbie Sherwin for the Shelter. Al Prince Landscaping and University
Baptist Church were honored with the Giving Award.
In honor of
Carolyn Hibbard and Marvis Carmichael of Star Toyota, a new award
called “The Star Award” was unveiled this year and is
slated as an annual award. Without the bi -annual food drives that
Star Toyota sponsors, BATP’s food costs would practically
double. But Star’s dedication to the mission of BATP does
not end with the food drives! Star Toyota and Carolyn make a very
generous financial contribution every year. Staff at BATP also feel
comfortable calling on Carolyn or Marvis to help with other needs
throughout the year, knowing they genuinely care for those served
at BATP.
Bono writes
“When the story of these times gets written, we want it to
say that we did all we could, and it was more than anyone could
have imagined.” Truly these words convey the essence of our
volunteers and why we celebrate the many who reach far beyond the
normal boundaries of unselfish acts.
